How yoga changed my life
Meet Chloe, a passionate and dedicated yoga teacher, who is also one of the youngest instructors on BookIn. We asked her to share her story on how yoga changed her life. Read on to find out more about the transformative and healing power of this practice.
What yoga is for me
My life was a mess before I found yoga.
I had just dropped out of school and didn't know what to do with myself. When I chose to pursue a career in what I loved, yoga, I suddenly had a solid path in front of me – one that offered so many opportunities to explore. I took a year-long teacher training course which, by the way, I would recommend everyone doing, whether they want to be a yoga teacher or not. The benefits are scientifically proven.
The training brought up a lot more stuff in me than I thought it would. It wasn't just about the physical practice – we did a lot of theory and deep personal work which was crazy and wonderful at the same time!
Yoga is like a toolbox. It gives me different perspectives on life, like gratefulness and mindfulness, which have completely changed the way I think. I used to have negative thoughts all the time. My practice gives me more strength and will power and has equipped me to live a happier life.
By practicing yoga, I also learnt to like and respect myself. I finally get why self-love is so important and so powerful. I wish everyone would be kinder to themselves.
Yoga helps me process my emotions in a healthy way. When I practice, I feel a release. Since I started training, I have let go of a lot of stuff I used to be angry about. I had been experiencing depression, and now that weight is off my shoulders. I had been grieving a family member for years and years, and just couldn’t get over it, no matter how many counsellors I talked to. Yoga healed that pain.
And the best part is, I don’t have to talk to anyone – I just do my practice and work it all out of my system.
I like to think of it as my restart button.
In our yoga teacher training, we adopted a whole new lifestyle. I now have all these little practices that can be applied on and off the mat. I've formed habits that help me stay present every moment. I learnt to cook in a way that respects the food and myself. So many things!
Yoga is a holistic practice – it’s the way we breathe, move, eat, sleep, get up in the morning.
Most of all, yoga is a gift I love to share with others. I teach private and group classes in Central and on Lamma Island. I keep my classes small so I can focus on each person, making sure they get the most out of it.
I always ask my students what they want to work on in advance. Whether it’s, “I've got tension in my shoulders” or, “I have a karate exam tonight and need help conditioning my body” or, “I can’t sleep”, I can tailor my classes. Even in small groups. I customise a mix of materials and techniques for what they need. Yoga is so diverse like that. It's amazing.
